The largest concentration of Bronze Age rock carvings in Denmark awaits you. As you stand in front of Madsebakke, a rocky slope just north of Allinge on the beautiful island of Bornholm, imagine a time over 2,500 years ago. This was a sacred place, a sanctuary for the people of the Bronze Age. Madsebakke is a place of mystery, a place where the whispers of the past still echo in the wind. The carvings themselves, etched into the granite, are a window into a forgotten world. They are depictions of ships, wheel crosses, foot marks, and numerous bowl signs. The site is steeped in stories, with theories about their meaning and creation still being explored. The most striking feature is the large ship carving, some believe it represents the sun’s journey across the sky, while others see it as a symbol for sailing to the afterlife. You can almost feel the presence of the ancient people here, the echoes of their rituals and beliefs. The rock carvings were not created all at once; there are almost 400 years between the oldest and youngest images. Experts believe that Madsebakke once served as a place of spiritual importance for a wider region, where rituals, sacrifices, and gatherings took place. Sadly, two other nearby cliffs with similar carvings were destroyed in the 19th century during granite mining. But Madsebakke survived, thanks to the poor quality of the granite, which made it unsuitable for quarrying. Now, you can visit this site, a testament to the rich and ancient history of Bornholm. Step back in time and delve into the mysteries of the Bronze Age. As you leave this special place, keep in mind that you have just stepped into a world long gone, a world that is waiting to be deciphered.
