Imagine a school where tradition meets modernity. That is Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. Founded in 1835, it has a rich history. It has produced many notable citizens. The school is known for its large campus. The campus boasts large playgrounds and verdant gardens. Various facilities enhance the learning experience.

Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School started as a small school for boys. Two chaplains of the Church of Scotland founded it. Rev. George James Laurie and Rev. Matthew Bowie established St. Andrew’s School in Egmore Madras. Rev. John Anderson, a missionary, then set up the General Assembly School. The school aimed to attract students from higher Hindu castes. The goal was to provide a good education with Bible truth.

In 1862, Rev. Dr. William Miller took over. The school grew into a college. The college was founded on a 375-acre campus. Miller created hostels and academic associations. This shaped Madras Christian College into a premier institution. In 1877, the school got its present name Madras Christian College.

By 1931, the school needed a larger site. Mr. Kuruvilla Jacob intensified efforts to move the school. The present site at Chetpet was purchased. In 1950, the school moved into the new building. During Mr. Jacob’s time, the school excelled in academics and extracurricular activities.

Mr. Matthias became Headmaster in 1962. He formed the first Parent-Teacher Association. He added the seventh standard block and equipped the laboratories. Mr. E. D. Savarirayan added new chemistry and physics laboratories in 1967.

In 1973, Dr. Clement Felix started many building projects. These included the swimming pool and the auditorium. The higher secondary course was introduced during his tenure. Dr. A. Jefferson Christopher set up a computer laboratory in 1992. He also established a junior science lab.

Mr. G. J. Manohar became headmaster in 2006. He started the nursery and primary sections. He constructed a new block for standards six to eight. He introduced Smart Board classes. He also revived the Old Boys Association.

Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School offers classes from LKG to class XII. The Tamil Nadu State Board Syllabus is followed. The medium of instruction is English. Tamil, Hindi, and French are taught as languages.

The school promotes extracurricular activities. These include art and craft and dance. Vocal and instrumental music and drama are also included. Students can participate in yoga and quiz. Sports include basketball and hockey. Table-tennis, badminton, and athletics are also popular.

The school also has a hostel facility from class VI to class XII. The hostel includes a well-furnished infirmary. A warden and a medical attendant are available.
