High above Milan the Madonnina gleams. She is more than a statue. She is a symbol. A protector. A beacon of hope.

This isn’t just any statue. This is the Madonnina the Virgin Mary atop Milan Cathedral. She stands 416 meters tall a gilded copper figure overlooking the city below. For centuries the Madonnina has watched over Milan. Her story is intertwined with the city’s history.

Giuseppe Perego sculpted her in 1774. It wasn’t a simple task. Creating her involved skilled craftsmen. Giuseppe Antignati made the counterform. Blacksmith Varino crafted the supporting armor. Goldsmith Giuseppe Bini hammered the copper plates. Painter Anton Raphael Mengs advised on the gilding. Over 6750 sheets of pure gold were used to cover the Madonnina. The result is stunning. A masterpiece of artistry and devotion.

The Madonnina’s placement wasn’t immediate. There were fears about the wind and lightning. She remained inside for a while. Finally in December 1774 she found her place. High on the Duomo’s spire.

During World War II the Madonnina was hidden. A grey-green cloth protected her. This lasted five years. It prevented her from becoming a target for bombers. On May 6 1945 Cardinal Schuster presided over her unveiling. It was a solemn ceremony marking the end of a dark chapter in Milan’s history. The Madonnina had survived.

The Madonnina has undergone several restorations. In 1967 her copper sheets were removed and regilded. The corroded iron core was replaced with stainless steel. A major restoration occurred in 2012 alongside the restoration of the Great Spire. She continues to stand strong. A symbol of resilience and faith.

More than a religious symbol the Madonnina is also a civic one. During the Five Days of Milan in 1848 patriots raised the Italian flag next to her. It signaled the Austrian troops’ retreat. The Madonnina embodied the city’s courage. To this day the Italian flag adorns the Madonnina on special occasions. A proud reminder of Milan’s spirit.

So look up. Behold the Madonnina. Marvel at her beauty. Let her story inspire you. She is a testament to Milan’s enduring spirit its history and its faith. She is the heart and soul of Milan. And she watches over you.
