A shepherdess found it. The Mädchenkruz, or Maiden cross, has a tale woven into its very stone. We stand before a monument erected in 1834. It marks a place of legend.

The story of the Mädchenkruz starts long before this stone cross. It begins with a silver cross. This cross wasn’t just any cross. This was a gilded silver cross with a wooden core. It dates back to the 13th century. Today, it resides within the Freiburg Minster’s treasury.

The legend tells of a shepherd girl. She tended her flock on the Schlossberg, the castle hill. One morning, she saw a glittering light. It shone from the grass. Drawn closer, she discovered a crucifix. It was radiant and seemingly not made by human hands.

Angels sang. Doves soared with silver wings. The girl ran to tell everyone of her miraculous find. The news spread like wildfire. People streamed to the mountain. They came with priests bearing gold monstrances. They came with banners and songs. The bells of the Minster rang out in celebration.

The priest blessed the land. A chorus proclaimed praise for Christ. The procession carried the cross down to the city. It was brought to the Minster. There, it became known as the Mädchenkruz. This name honored the maiden who discovered it.

Kilian Halbmann immortalized this legend in a ballad. He published it in the Freiburger Zeitung in 1856. Halbmann was a theological student. He wrote many ballads about local legends. His poem captured the imagination of Freiburg.

The poem describes the scene. Incense fills the air. Trumpets blare and hymns echo. Twelve virgins dressed in white accompany the cross. It is adorned with lilies. The Mädchenkruz leads the procession.

The original site of the discovery is now marked by this stone cross. Küfers-Wittwe Theresie Benck funded its creation. The inscription reads, “Out of love for their Redeemer.” Maier sculpted the cross in 1834.

Some believe the legend arose after the cross was erected. Perhaps the cross inspired the story. The Mädchenkruz serves as a reminder of faith. It connects us to a story of divine intervention.

The Mädchenkruz stands as a symbol. It embodies the intersection of faith, folklore, and local history. It reminds us of Freiburg’s rich cultural heritage. Take a moment to reflect on the story. Think of the shepherd girl. Consider the power of belief. The Mädchenkruz continues to inspire.
