Envision a beacon of faith. Maclin Temple Church of God in Christ stands as a testament to Detroit’s vibrant spiritual landscape. I am honored to share its story.

The Church of God in Christ denomination boasts a rich history. It began in 1897. Dissension within Baptist ranks led to its formation. Key figures Charles Price Jones and Charles Harrison Mason championed Wesleyan holiness. Their teachings emphasized Christian perfection.

Expulsion from the Mississippi State Convention of the National Baptist Convention didn’t deter them. Mason established the St. Paul Church in Lexington Mississippi. He sought a unique name. Inspired by Thessalonians he chose Church of God in Christ.

The early 1900s marked a pivotal shift. Mason visited the Azusa Street Revival. He experienced baptism in the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues. This ignited further division. In 1907 Mason reorganized the Church of God in Christ embracing Pentecostalism. He became General Overseer.

From humble beginnings the Church of God in Christ became a beacon of hope. It spread across the United States and beyond. Bishop John Drew Sheard Sr. currently leads the denomination. He pastors Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ in Detroit. In 2021 he was elected Presiding Bishop.

COGIC’s influence extends far beyond its congregations. The church played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement. COGIC has a long history of ecumenism.

The Church of God in Christ maintains a strong organizational structure. Jurisdictions oversee numerous churches. Annually events foster community and spiritual growth. These events include the International Holy Convocation.

The Church of God in Christ also strongly supports missionary work. The Women’s Department plays a vital role in ministry. The church has numerous educational institutions. These institutions include the C.H. Mason Theological Seminary.
