What lies beneath our feet often goes unnoticed. Yet, right here, the Mackey Brick and Tile Manufacturing Company Plaque reminds us of a man who shaped the very landscape we stand on. Nelson Mackey, a New Yorker drawn to the promise of Texas, arrived in San Antonio in the late 1870s. His ventures led him to Calaveras, a town brimming with the vital ingredient for his future success: clay.

In 1887, Mackey, with partners in tow, purchased vast tracts of land around Calaveras. He envisioned a brick empire, fueled by the earth itself. 150 acres were dedicated to mining clay, while the rest provided the wood to fire his insatiable kilns. Mackey’s company was a hive of activity. Workers, many from local families, toiled in the shadow of the kilns, their pay in company tokens, redeemable at the company store.

The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad, recognizing the potential of this burgeoning industry, built a spur line directly to the Mackey site. Soon, the distinctive buff-colored bricks were clattering their way across South Texas. Look around, the legacy of Mackey Brick is etched in the foundations of San Antonio. The Federal Building, the Menger Hotel, the Vance Building, all bear the mark of Mackey’s vision.

But his ambition didn’t stop at city limits. Seven million Mackey bricks built the Southwest Texas State Lunatic Asylum, a testament to his company’s reach. Each brick, he boasted, could build a road from San Antonio to Chicago. In 1889, ever the entrepreneur, Mackey expanded, adding “tile” to his company’s name and producing red clay pipe from a quarry south of the city.

The Mackey Brick and Tile Manufacturing Company wasn’t just a business, it was a story of ambition, innovation, and the transformation of a landscape. So, the next time you walk the streets of San Antonio, look down, and remember the man whose bricks built a city.
