The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans wafts through the air. It’s a scent that speaks of history. This is Machwitz Kaffee.

Right here on Am Marstall stands a testament to Hanover’s rich coffee heritage. Machwitz Kaffee a name synonymous with quality and tradition. Its story began not here in Hanover but far away in Danzig in 1883. Wilhelm Machwitz founded the company there. It was then a small general store selling roasted coffee. After World War I the company expanded. It opened a specialty coffee shop in Hanover in 1919. Its location near the Kröpcke was strategic. Its distinctive logo three Mohren or Moors became a well-known symbol.

Tragedy struck during World War II. Allied bombing raids in 1943 destroyed the shop. But the spirit of Machwitz Kaffee survived. In 1948 Walter Koch a shrewd businessman took over. He not only revived the brand but also its iconic logo. He initially ran a colonial goods store. After the currency reform of 1948 he was able to import raw coffee. This enabled him to re-establish the roasting facility in 1950. Machwitz Kaffee’s success continued. In 1951 it acquired the venerable F J Seeger tea shop. It also took over Eichhorn Kaffee a larger roastery in 1968 and Ernst Grote Kaffee in 1971. By the 1970s Machwitz Kaffee was among Germany’s most famous coffee brands.

But the coffee landscape shifted. The rise of large roasters and supermarket chains led to intense competition. Machwitz Kaffee adapted. It transitioned from wholesale distribution to direct sales. Today it supplies cafes offices and canteens. Their product line is diverse. It includes six types of coffee tea chocolate and other accessories. Since 1998 Jörg Walter Koch has led the company. His son Maximilian Koch joined him in 2010. Since 1999 Machwitz Kaffee has been involved with the World Coffee chain and its successor Balzac Coffee Company as a house roaster. Since 2010 they’ve run their own cafe in Hanover’s city center.

The company’s logo the three Mohren has been a subject of debate. Some view it as a racist relic from the colonial era. Others see it as a historical symbol. Machwitz Kaffee has maintained it’s a tradition. It acknowledges the controversy. However a new logo without the Mohren is now being used in some places.

Today as you stand before Machwitz Kaffee remember its enduring legacy. It’s a story of resilience adaptation and a love for the perfect cup. Enjoy your coffee.
