In 1866, a seed of faith was planted, blossoming into what we now know as Macedonia Baptist Church. Just after the Civil War, former slave Isaac Brockenton and thirteen others bravely stepped away from First Baptist Church of Darlington. They yearned for a place of their own, a spiritual sanctuary where their voices could rise unburdened. Guided by Dr. Corey, a missionary from the North, they formed Macedonia Baptist Church. Their first meetings were simple, held beneath the shade of a brush arbor and in the warmth of members’ homes. This humble start speaks volumes about the church’s enduring spirit. Eventually, they built their first sanctuary at the corner of Hampton and Russell, now South Main. A story, perhaps legend, tells of Brockenton placing a quarter on the offering table. It was a quiet but powerful declaration that it was time for a dedicated house of worship. While it might have initially drawn laughter, within a year, a new church stood as a testament to their faith. Brockenton led his congregation until his death in 1908. He was succeeded by Reverend P.A. Callaham, who oversaw a period of growth for Macedonia Baptist Church. Then came Dr. James E. Kirkland, leading from 1919 to 1920. It was under Kirkland’s guidance that the congregation began raising funds for their present site in 1922. The campaign continued under Dr. C.D. Hubert, even after Kirkland moved to White Rock Baptist Church in Durham. Hubert himself left in 1925 to become president of Morehouse College. Yet, the congregation’s dream persisted. Finally, under Dr. H.W. Long’s leadership (1927-1945), the current brick church was completed. On a cold February morning in 1935, the congregation joyfully held their first service in the new building. It marked the end of a decade-long journey. Macedonia Baptist Church’s story doesn’t end there. In 1890, they established a five-acre cemetery. Years later, in 1946, two other churches, Bethel A.M.E. and St. James Methodist, joined them, each adding two acres. Together, they formed Darlington Memorial Cemetery, a significant landmark as the first African-American cemetery in Darlington. This cemetery, a resting place for many prominent Black citizens, stands as a testament to Macedonia Baptist Church’s enduring impact on the community.
