In 1885 a small group of believers formed the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. They met in a humble log cabin. This very ground you stand on now holds its history. The church’s humble beginnings were marked by a deep faith. A small group including Rev Jenkins McNatt Bro Joe Frasier Bro Abram and Sis Annie Stevens started it. They moved from Tom’s Creek Baptist Church.
Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to perseverance. It’s a story of growth and adaptation. It reflects the community’s spirit. Through the years the church saw many pastors. Each contributed to its journey. Rev DJ Garvin formalized the church’s organization in 1887. He ordained deacons Sam Harris and HS Smith. James M Smith donated land including the log cabin.
The first official sanctuary was a step forward. It involved purchasing lumber. Construction continued under Rev WM Harrison. Members built the furniture. The church kept evolving. J B Batey became pastor in 1897 adding finishing touches. He installed the first pews.
The early 1900s brought growth and prosperity. Several pastors served. Rev WJ Jackson oversaw a property resurvey. This was during the formation of Long County. Rev SB Stewart’s time brought a choir and an organ. He also reactivated ministries. He dreamed of a new building. That dream laid the foundation for this present structure.
Rev EJ Junior remodeled the church. He added a piano. The church expanded rapidly under his leadership. Rev Stewart returned in 1948. He laid the foundation for the current building. He sadly did not see it completed. Rev JE Clark secured a bank loan. This helped buy new furnishings. He also organized a youth department. His service spanned 24 years.
The church continued to see changes in leadership. Rev HW McCrary served briefly but had a significant impact. Rev Isaac Culbreth Jr oversaw renovations. He landscaped the grounds with help from the community’s Honeysuckle Garden Club. Rev Anthony Chavers added a third Sunday service. Rev Andre Wright added a first Sunday service. He launched a radio broadcast. Rev Quentin J Morris Sr saw membership increase greatly. He acquired additional property. Rev Victor C Brewton Sr obtained 501C3 nonprofit status. He secured the current fellowship hall. Minister Diane Berry became the first female Interim Pastor. Finally Rev Anthony Chavers returned as the 19th Pastor in 2023.
Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the enduring faith of a community. It shows the power of collective effort and vision.
