Was it faith that built MacArthur Park Lutheran Church or was it rocks? You might think that’s a strange question. But as you stand here, in front of this house of worship, I want you to consider the story of its creation. The year was 1955. The Augustana Lutheran Church set its sights on northeast San Antonio. Their mission: to plant a new congregation. Five years later, a young Pastor George Schwanenberg answered the call, becoming the mission developer. He held the first service for MacArthur Park Lutheran Church not in a grand building but a rented office space. Can you imagine? December 4, 1960, 84 souls gathered, their faith the cornerstone. The church, named for its proximity to MacArthur Park and High School, soon found a permanent home on Nacogdoches Road. But here’s where the rocks come in. As the first building arose, members brought stones, physical testaments to their commitment. Some were local, others traveled from afar: Pike’s Peak, the Alamo, even the hillside of Galilee. Each rock, a prayer, a hope, a piece of their own journeys. These stones weren’t just building materials, they were the physical manifestation of faith in action. So the next time you see a church, remember MacArthur Park Lutheran Church. Remember that faith isn’t just something you believe, it’s something you build, stone by stone.
