Gazing up at Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College, imagine two intertwined legacies. This college, established in the fall of 2016, stands as a testament to the enduring contributions of Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam. Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College isn’t just a building. It represents the spirit of giving and the profound impact two individuals can have on a community. The college was made possible by a generous donation of MOP30,000,000 from Lo Pak Sam Memorial Limited to the University of Macau Development Foundation. The University of Macau chose to honor these two remarkable individuals by naming their ninth residential college after them. Ma Man Kei (1919-2014), a prominent figure in Macau, was known for his tireless work as a social activist, patriot, and educator. He served as the Permanent President of the Macao Chamber of Commerce and held the esteemed position of University Council Chair of the University of East Asia, the predecessor of the University of Macau. His dedication to the betterment of society earned him the title of “Reform Pioneer.” Even the cosmos recognized his contributions. An asteroid, 228158, bears his name: MAMANKEI. Lo Pak Sam (1922-2000) dedicated her life to social work, focusing on the well-being of women and children. As the Executive Member of the All-China Women’s Federation and President of the Women’s General Association of Macau, she tirelessly championed their cause. Her efforts left an indelible mark on Macau’s social landscape, elevating the status of women and advancing children’s education. United in marriage in 1943, Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam shared a common passion for philanthropy and education. Together, they worked tirelessly to uplift their community. Their commitment to education is further symbolized by a bronze statue, crafted by renowned sculptor Professor Cao Chong En in 1991, which graces the lobby of Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College. The college itself has undergone a transformation. It expanded with two additional floors, accommodating even more students and solidifying its presence on campus. Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College’s story is one of enduring dedication, inspiring generosity, and the power of collaboration. As you stand before this impressive building, remember the remarkable individuals whose legacy continues to inspire generations of students within its walls.
