“Did you know that this unassuming plaque holds the key to a century of faith?” The Lytle Methodist Church Plaque stands before us a testament to unwavering devotion. It tells a story of a community built on faith and resilience. Founded in 1889 this church was the dream of W C Newton a local farmer and preacher. He became known as “The Father of the Lytle Methodist Church” because of his tireless work.

The first appointed pastor Reverend Jerome P Garrett served from 1891 to 1893. In 1892 the congregation built their first sanctuary. The railroad’s arrival in Lytle changed things. It bypassed Benton City. But in 1909 the Benton City Methodist congregation merged with the Lytle church strengthening their shared faith.

The Lytle Methodist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a vibrant hub of community activity. A Women’s Missionary Society was formed in 1915. Youth groups and a Methodist Men’s Club flourished. The church expanded and renovated its sanctuary in 1922. In 1950 a multipurpose education building was added. A building committee planned a new brick sanctuary in 1957 featuring a cathedral ceiling and beautiful stained-glass windows. The church’s growth reflects the enduring power of faith.

This wasn’t a story of easy triumphs. The church faced challenges and adapted to change. The merging of congregations shows their willingness to adapt and grow. The expansion projects highlight the commitment of the community. The changing name to Lytle United Methodist Church in 1968 reflected evolving religious practices.

Today the Lytle United Methodist Church continues its legacy of service. It provides diverse ministries through worship study programs and charitable work. This plaque isn’t merely a historical marker. It’s a living symbol of faith community and perseverance. It’s a quiet reminder of the enduring spirit of the Lytle community. It’s a testament to the power of shared beliefs. It’s a beacon for those seeking connection and solace. Take a moment to reflect on the rich history enshrined in this simple plaque. It’s a story worth remembering.
