Lynwood has a rich history. In 1810, Don Antonio Lugo received a land grant. This large tract was about 29514 acres. He named it Rancho San Antonio. Lugo was mayor of Los Angeles from 1816 to 1819. The United States government recognized Lugo as the owner of Rancho San Antonio in 1847. This area later became Lynwood.
After Lugo’s death in 1860, his children inherited the rancho. Guadalupe Lugo received the land now known as Lynwood. She later deeded it to Heldman. Then it was deeded to M.A. Shields in 1871. Later Slauson a Los Angeles banker acquired it. Slauson Avenue is named after him.
In 1902, C.H. Sessions established a dairy. It was called the Lynwood Dairy and Creamery. His wife’s maiden name was Lynne Wood. The Southern Pacific Railway had a siding there. They also called it Lynwood siding.
In 1921, Lynwood officially became a city.
The Lynwood Library has been around since May 1915. It started as a volunteer library. Soon it joined the Los Angeles County Public Library System. Lynwood is served by the Lynwood Unified School District.
