Gazing up at Lykavitos Hill, have you ever wondered about its dramatic birth? Legend says Athena, patron goddess of Athens, accidentally created it. She was carrying a mountain from Pallene, intending to place it on the Acropolis. But when the box containing Erichthonius, a mythical serpent-man, was opened, she was startled. She dropped the mountain. It landed right here, becoming Lykavitos Hill. This prominent landmark, at 277 meters above sea level, is the highest point in central Athens. You can see its distinctive outline from all over the city. The name Lykavitos possibly comes from “lycos,” the Greek word for wolf. Some believe wolves once roamed its slopes. Today, pine trees cover its base. Atop Lykavitos Hill stands the charming 19th-century Chapel of St. George. You can also find a restaurant and theatre, although the theatre is currently closed. For a thrilling ascent, take the Lycabettus Funicular from Kolonaki. The views from the top are breathtaking, offering a panorama of Athens that stretches to the sea. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic stroll or a quiet moment of reflection. You can also enjoy refreshments at the cafes and bars located there. Lykavitos Hill is truly a magical place, steeped in myth and offering unparalleled views of this ancient city.
