In 1890, a bright young boy named Paul Hazard first walked through the doors of Lycée d’Armentières. Little did he know, this school would eventually bear his name: Lycée Paul Hazard. Today, we stand before this institution. It’s a testament to a man who dedicated his life to exploring the human spirit. Lycée Paul Hazard isn’t just a school. It’s a living piece of history, reaching back to the late 19th century. In 1881, Mayor Mathias Tahon-Fauvel saw the need for a boys’ college in Armentières, fueled by the Third Republic’s focus on education. His vision took shape thanks to architect Charles Marteau and the skilled hands of builder César Debosque. The lycée we see now, with its three rectangular courtyards – A, B, and C – each framed by two-story buildings, is a result of their design. The lycée is more than just bricks and mortar. It has nurtured generations of students. Paul Hazard himself, a future historian and member of the Académie française, studied here from 1890 to 1896. He later authored “The Crisis of the European Mind,” a seminal work exploring the intellectual landscape of 17th and 18th-century Europe. But Hazard isn’t the only notable alumnus. The iconic French singer and actress Line Renaud also graced these halls. Nicolas Théry, president of Crédit Mutuel, and even three members of the band PZK, formed in 2005, all share a connection to Lycée Paul Hazard. As you gaze upon this building, imagine the countless students who have walked these corridors, each with their own dreams and aspirations. Lycée Paul Hazard stands not only as a place of learning. It represents the enduring power of education to shape individuals and communities.
