“Horas ne numerem nisi serenas” These words grace the clock tower. They’re the motto of Lycee Massena. A motto urging us to count only happy hours. This magnificent building stands before us. A testament to history and education.

Lycee Massena in Nice isn’t just a school. It’s a living monument. It’s a place where history breathes. Its foundations were laid long ago. In 1623 Discalced Augustinians built a convent here. This was outside the city walls on the Paillon River. Years later during the French Revolution the convent became a central school. Napoleon Bonaparte then transformed it. He decreed a lycee in every department capital. This school in Nice became the first and only lycee in the Alpes-Maritimes.

The story of Lycee Massena is entwined with the history of Nice. It has witnessed eras of change. It has seen the ebb and flow of power. From Imperial Lycee to Royal College. Then back to an Imperial Lycee. It even became a National Lycee. Eventually it received its current name. In 1963 it was renamed Lycee Massena. This honored Marshal Andre Massena. He played a key role in the creation of the Imperial Lycee. The school finally opened its doors to girls in 1963.

This isn’t just a tale of changing names. It’s a tale of architectural beauty. Italian Asian and Art Nouveau influences blend seamlessly. The clock tower stands tall. Its intricate design speaks of a bygone era. The building’s layout is thoughtful. Grand staircases connect classrooms. Open corridors ensure good ventilation. Colorful mosaics and sculpted frescoes decorate the walls. These artworks depict scenes of Niçoise life. They tell stories of the past within the building itself. The central garden offers a tranquil escape. There are even two war memorials and a sundial.

The sundial is unique. It shows solstices equinoxes and the Earth’s axial tilt. A remarkable feature calculated in 1929 by A Schaumasse. The sundial even incorporates the equation of time. This converts solar time into legal time.

Lycee Massena has educated generations. Many famous alumni have graced its halls. Among them are Nobel Prize winners renowned writers and influential politicians. It’s a testament to the school’s impact. Its enduring legacy is woven into the very fabric of Nice.

Today Lycee Massena continues its mission. It offers both secondary and preparatory classes. The school nurtures future leaders and thinkers. It fosters a love of learning and a spirit of inquiry. This isn’t just a building. It’s a place of dreams and aspirations. It’s a place where history and the future converge. As you leave Lycee Massena remember the happy hours it has witnessed.
