This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a living archive. Lutwyche Mosque holds a unique place in Brisbane’s history. Built between 1968 and 1971 it replaced an earlier mosque dating back to around 1909. This makes it a rare example of traditionally styled late twentieth-century Islamic architecture in the city.

Imagine the Afghan camel drivers who arrived in Australia between 1867 and 1910. They were the first Muslims to bring the Quran to this land. They laid the foundation for the Islamic community in Brisbane. Many settled in the Holland Park area. They established farms growing cotton and mangoes. Some even started a small quilt and mattress factory.

The original Lutwyche Mosque. It stood on land purchased in 1909. This land was part of a larger parcel once owned by an Afghan migrant Abdullah Khan later Kauss. He and other Muslim families formed an enclave in this then rural area. This was a time of prejudice and discrimination. The mosque served as a refuge and a center of community.

The current Lutwyche Mosque wasn’t built in isolation. King Faisal of Saudi Arabia contributed 1000 pounds sterling towards its construction. This was part of his larger program to support Islamic projects overseas. The mosque’s construction was an act of collective effort and international solidarity.

Lutwyche Mosque is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of perseverance. It stands as a beacon of faith for the Muslim community in Brisbane and beyond. It reflects the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that makes Brisbane the vibrant city it is today. It’s a reminder that even amidst prejudice and hardship faith can flourish and communities can thrive. This is Lutwyche Mosque a place of worship a symbol of hope a story of resilience and cultural pride.
