Ever wondered where the Reformation truly began? Here at the Lutherstein in Stotternheim, we stand at what some call the birthplace of the Reformation.

The Lutherstein marks a pivotal moment in Martin Luther’s life. On July 2, 1505, Luther, a law student at Erfurt University, was walking back to Erfurt. He was returning from visiting his parents in Mansfeld. A terrible thunderstorm suddenly engulfed him near Stotternheim.

Terrified for his life, Luther cried out to St. Anne. He vowed to become a monk if he survived. “Help, St. Anne, I will become a monk.” This is the cry that echoes through history here at the Lutherstein.

This event wasn’t just a fleeting moment of panic. It set Luther on a new path. Just 15 days later, on July 17, 1505, Luther entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt. He took his monk’s vows in 1506. In 1507, he was ordained as a priest.

The Lutherstein itself is a memorial to this turning point. In 1917, an Erfurt resident, Dorothea Peterstein, donated a memorial stone. It is made of Swedish granite. The stone was erected where historical accounts suggest Luther made his vow.

The Lutherstein bears inscriptions. They read “Consecrated Earth,” “Point of Origin of the Reformation,” and “In a lightning flash from heaven, the way was shown to young Luther here”. The reverse side commemorates the vow and the day of the thunderstorm.

The “Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung” called the thunderstorm the “Big Bang of the Reformation.” Without that terrifying experience, there might have been no Reformation. World history might have taken a different course.

The Lutherstein has long been a pilgrimage site. Visitors retrace Luther’s footsteps in and around Erfurt. The area around the Lutherstein has been redesigned. It now features open green space, benches, and a shelter.

As you stand here, consider the weight of that moment. A young man’s cry in the face of death. That cry changed the course of religious history. The Lutherstein stands as a reminder of that powerful turning point. A simple walk in the fields became a walk into history.
