Envision a church ablaze. Not with the warm glow of candlelight, but with the destructive fury of unchecked flames. This disastrous scene played out at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in 1882. The Lutheran Church of the Incarnation stands on Madison Avenue, a testament to resilience and rebirth. Originally built in 1864-1865, the church was designed by Emlen T. Littell. Its beauty was renowned, admired for both its architecture and its exquisite interior art. The cornerstone was laid in 1864 by Bishop Horatio Potter. The first services were held on December 11th of that year. The church was consecrated on April 20th, 1865. Just seventeen years later, disaster struck. A fire, beginning on March 24, 1882, ravaged the structure. Only the tower and walls survived the inferno. From the ashes, the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation rose again. Architect David Jardine oversaw the reconstruction, expanding the church and solidifying its presence. Later, in 1896, Heins & LaFarge added a spire, a beacon reaching towards the heavens, completing Jardine’s original vision. Even amidst this architectural history, the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation continued its mission. It served as a spiritual home to notable figures like Admiral David Farragut and Eleanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt’s confirmation took place within these walls. The church also witnessed the poignant funeral of Sara Roosevelt, mother of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. A ramp was specially constructed for FDR to attend, a silent testament to the church’s inclusivity. Today, the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community. It carries within its stones the echoes of its past. From destruction to restoration, it has served as a spiritual anchor in a constantly changing city.
