Thirty years ago a group called Etat d’Urgence settled in a former gold roughing factory. They wanted a place for young people to gather. This was L’Usine. They faced a struggle with the authorities. Their persistence led to L’Usine’s creation on the banks of the Rhone.

L’Usine is more than just a building. It’s a self-managed cultural center. The City of Geneva provides the space. Eighteen collectives and associations call it home. They’re dedicated to non-profit cultural promotion.

Inside L’Usine you’ll find concert halls nightclubs art galleries. There’s even a theater and cinema. Many spaces are devoted to creative and recreational activities. L’Usine’s programming is innovative. It challenges the traditional market logic of profit.

A unique aspect of L’Usine’s history is its ongoing tension with authorities. Despite regular threats to its existence L’Usine has thrived. It’s celebrated its 30th anniversary. It has become a Geneva institution. A true mecca of alternative culture in Geneva and all of Switzerland.

The original bar Le Moloko was legendary. It embodied the punk culture’s spirit of rebellion. It was a haven for the alternative community rejecting capitalist norms. The Makhno bar now occupies that space. Though its ideology has evolved it still offers diverse programming. You can find everything from militant rap to dub rock and punk. The Makhno bar also shows films and hosts political cafes.

L’Usine is a vibrant hub of activity. It houses numerous workshops and creative spaces. You can find recording studios a screen printing workshop and a photography studio. There are even a hair salon and a record label. The different entities within L’Usine interact. They create production chains for music and organize multidisciplinary events. It’s a truly collaborative environment.

L’Usine embraces self-management. There is no permanent delegation of power. Every member participates in weekly management meetings. They make decisions collectively. This fosters a culture of shared ideas and practices. A rejection of profit-driven competition and hierarchy.

L’Usine’s funding comes from various sources. They include bar sales ticket sales and member dues. It refuses sponsorships avoiding commercial interests. However some groups within L’Usine receive public funding. The city of Geneva provides substantial annual grants. This allows them to maintain their creative and community focused programming. They are independent but the money keeps the doors open and the music playing.

L’Usine isn’t just a cultural center. It is also a political force. It has been a vocal advocate for preserving alternative spaces in Geneva. It continues to fight for the diversity of cultural expression in the city. It faces challenges such as noise complaints and accusations of harboring drug dealers. Despite these obstacles L’Usine persists as a vital alternative in Geneva’s cultural landscape. L’Usine a testament to the power of collective action and the enduring spirit of alternative culture.
