Is there a lake more steeped in legend than Luo Lake? Here on the edge of this stunning body of water, the air itself hums with ancient stories. Luo Lake, nestled in the northwest of the Yunnan plateau, straddles the border of Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. It’s a high-altitude lake, a sparkling jewel at 2,685 meters above sea level, making it the highest in Yunnan Province. The Mosuo people, the largest of several minority groups living around the lake, call Luo Lake their “mother lake.” They believe it was formed by the tears of a goddess named Gemu, weeping for a lost love. One version of the tale tells of Gemu chasing after a mountain spirit who had come to visit her. He rode away, leaving only a hoofprint. Gemu’s tears filled the print, creating Luo Lake. Another version speaks of the god Waru Shila, Gemu’s lover. He fled on horseback at daybreak to avoid discovery, his horse stumbling and creating a depression. Gemu’s tears filled this depression, birthing the lake, and she cast her pearls into the water, creating the five islands you can see today. The lake’s clear, turquoise waters reflect the sky and the surrounding mountains. Five islands dot its surface, and its shores are scalloped with fourteen bays and seventeen beaches. Four peninsulas reach out into the lake, like fingers tracing the water’s surface. Luo Lake is not just a beautiful sight. It’s a vital ecosystem. The lake supports several endemic fish species, sadly now endangered due to overfishing and the introduction of non-native species. It’s also a haven for migratory birds, including the majestic black-necked crane. As you gaze across Luo Lake, imagine the pig-trough boats, known as “zhucaochuan,” plying the waters between the villages of Luoshui and Mukua. Picture the Mosuo people, with their unique matriarchal society, living in harmony with the lake and its rhythms. Luo Lake is more than just a lake. It’s a place of legends, a testament to the power of love and loss, a vibrant ecosystem, and a window into a unique and fascinating culture.
