Have you ever heard of a tower that was a powerhouse? Hidden in the shadows of the Lullwater Preserve, nestled amongst old-growth trees and verdant greenery, stands Lullwater Tower. Look closely, and you’ll notice its octagonal shape, climbing two stories high, its weathered stone walls a testament to time. This historical gem, a remnant of a bygone era, was once the heart of a sophisticated power system, a marvel of engineering in its time. Walter Candler, son of the Coca-Cola founder, designed and built Lullwater House in 1925. It was a grand estate, a testament to the Candler family’s wealth and influence. But Atlanta’s electrical grid had not yet reached this far. Candler had to find a solution to power his opulent house. The answer? A dam built across the nearby creek, creating a spillway whose water flowed towards Lullwater Tower. Inside the tower, humming machinery turned water power into electricity, a testament to the ingenuity that fueled the early 20th century. The machinery has long since been removed. The tower stands silent, a reminder of a time when nature’s power was harnessed to illuminate human lives.
