The Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge, towering over the Mississippi River, is more than just a way to cross the water. It’s a link to the past, a testament to the spirit of Louisiana and the man it was named for. The bridge, originally called the Luling-Destrehan Bridge, was built in 1983. It was the third major cable-stayed bridge in the United States and the only one crossing the Mississippi River at the time. It was later incorporated into Interstate 310 in 1993, becoming the first cable-stayed bridge to be part of the Interstate Highway System. The bridge was renamed in honor of Congressman Thomas Hale Boggs Sr., a prominent Louisiana politician who served in Congress for 22 years. He sadly perished in a plane crash in 1972. The bridge is a reminder of his legacy, and its graceful structure and sweeping views of the river are impressive. Imagine the folks navigating the river before the bridge was constructed. The only way to cross the Mississippi River was by Ferry, a slower and sometimes chaotic way to reach the other side. The arrival of the bridge was a defining moment for Luling and the surrounding communities, making this a unique and memorable landmark of the river.
