Here lies Captain Luis Daoiz. His final moments unfolded within these very walls. This unassuming plaque marks the spot where a national hero breathed his last.

The Luis Daoiz Plaque stands as a poignant reminder of the Dos de Mayo Uprising. It commemorates the bravery of Captain Luis Daoiz y Torres. He was a key figure in the fight against Napoleon’s invading forces. This uprising marked the beginning of the Spanish War of Independence.

Born in Seville in 1767 Daoiz came from a long line of Spanish gentry. His family had a history of military service dating back to the Reconquista. He received a Catholic education. Then he trained at the Royal School of Artillery in Segovia. He excelled in mathematics and saber fencing. He also learned several languages. His military career took him to North Africa. He fought against Moroccan forces. He was commended for his bravery and promoted to lieutenant. He later fought against the French in the War of the Pyrenees. He was captured but refused to join the French army.

After his release he served in the Spanish Navy. He participated in the defense of Cadiz and convoy duty in the Atlantic. He was promoted to captain. He rejoined his artillery regiment after tiring of sea duty. His duties included assisting in the manufacture of new guns. He also attended the signing of the Treaty of Fontainebleau with France. He even participated in the invasion of Portugal in 1807.

In 1808 Daoiz returned to Madrid. He became a leader of the uprising on May 2nd. He helped civilians resist the French. His defense of the Monteleon barracks was the only instance that day where the Spanish army fought the French. Though ultimately unsuccessful it inspired a nationwide uprising. Daoiz died in the fighting. He was subsequently commemorated as a national hero. His actions ignited the flame of resistance against French occupation.
