How about we dive into the heart of Ludwigshafen’s Südliche Innenstadt? This area isn’t just a district. It’s where modern Ludwigshafen began in 1843.

The Südliche Innenstadt is one of Ludwigshafen’s ten districts. It includes the city center, Mitte, and the Süd quarter. To the north, it borders the Nördliche Innenstadt. The Hochstraße Nord marks this boundary. To the east, the Rhine River separates it from Mannheim. The railway line to Schifferstadt forms the western border. Mundenheim lies to the south.

Many of Ludwigshafen’s cultural institutions call the Südliche Innenstadt home. The Pfalzbau, Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, and Staatsphilharmonie are here. You will also find the Kulturzentrum das HAUS, Ernst-Bloch-Zentrum, and Bgm.-Reichert-Haus.

Important administrative buildings are also located here. The Polizeipräsidium Ludwigshafen am Rhein has its headquarters here. The Finanzamt, Gesundheitszentrum Lusanum, and Pfalzwerke’s main headquarters are also in this district. The Südweststadion is also in the Süd part of town.

The Südliche Innenstadt boasts a great public transportation network. The Hauptbahnhof and Bahnhof Ludwigshafen Mitte are here. The central interchange at Berliner Platz adds to the convenience.

The Ludwigshafener Stadtpark sits on the Parkinsel. This park offers a place for relaxation. It hosts the Festival des deutschen Films every summer. From 2018 onward, it once again hosted the Kulturfestival Inselsommer.

The Südliche Innenstadt has a local council. This council is called the Ortsbeirat Südliche Innenstadt. It has 15 members. The council addresses important issues affecting the district. Christoph Heller has been the district’s mayor since 2004. He was re-elected in a runoff election on June 23, 2024.

The Südliche Innenstadt offers attractive residential areas. The Parkinsel area is particularly appealing. Other notable areas include the Musikantenviertel and Malerviertel. “Rheinufer Süd” is an upcoming residential area. It’s located on the Rhine near the Walzmühle. This is on former industrial land.

Don’t miss the Wochenmarkt in Mitte. It takes place on Friedrich-Wilhelm-Wagner-Platz. You can visit it Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays starting at 7 a.m.

The Südliche Innenstadt blends culture, administration, and leisure. It’s a vital part of Ludwigshafen’s identity. As we move on, consider how this district’s history shapes its present.
