By 2012, the Ludwig-Erhard-Brücke, once a symbol of modern engineering, was in dire need of repair. Instead of costly and disruptive renovations, a cutting-edge solution was employed. Special mats with electrodes were attached to the bridge. These mats gently extracted the salt from the concrete, effectively reversing the damage without major construction.
