Who knew a square could be so happy? Ludolfingerplatz, in Berlin’s Frohnau district, translates roughly to “Happy Meadow.” That name was chosen in 1909. Today, we stand at the heart of this tranquil garden suburb.
Ludolfingerplatz is more than just a pretty place. It is a blend of history, architecture and community. It was created between 1910 and 1912 by landscape architect Ludwig Lesser. The square forms the heart of Frohnau together with Zeltinger Platz.
Notice the art nouveau design. It connects Ludolfingerplatz and Zeltinger Platz. These squares were commissioned by Count Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck. He wanted to create beautiful green spaces. Lesser ensured the railway line disappeared into a noise-reducing trench. The bridge overhead created a connection between the squares.
Originally, this square was named Bahnhofsplatz. It was renamed Ludolfingerplatz in 1937. The name references the Liudolfingers. They were an old German ruling family.
Take a look around. The square features a rectangular fountain. You will also notice flower beds, stone benches, and neatly trimmed hedges. These elements create a relaxing atmosphere.
The fountain you see was installed in 1912. Josef Brix, Felix Genzmer, and Ludwig Lesser designed it. The fountain’s jets can reach about 80 centimeters high.
Five streets converge at Ludolfingerplatz. They are Welfenallee, Karmeliterweg, Sigismundkorso, Ludolfingerweg, and Maximiliankorso. There is also a smaller triangular area. It features a twelve-sided fountain.
The most prominent landmark is the 35-meter-high Kasinoturm. This tower initially served as a water tower with an observation deck. It opened in 1910. During the Second World War, it was used as a flak tower.
The tower was part of a complex. It included a casino with restaurants. These restaurants were destroyed in the war. In 1950/1951, a restaurant was rebuilt in the tower. It was also named Kasino.
Today, Ludolfingerplatz remains a vibrant hub. You will see shops and food markets. They offer a diverse selection of local treats. The square transforms throughout the day. In warmer months, the fountain becomes a popular gathering spot.
The best currywurst in the city is here, or so I’ve heard. This is also a favored spot for socializing. People come here to stroll and chat over coffee.
The Frohnauer train station is conveniently close. This makes Ludolfingerplatz easily accessible. It is a perfect blend of leisure and activity in a charming setting.
