Have you ever wondered where Paramaribo residents go for everything from clothing to home goods? Right here stands Lucky Store. Founded in 1959 by Nasser Issa, Lucky Store began as a small textile shop. It was just 150 square meters. Nasser and his wife Olga Issa-Shoul worked hard. Their goal was to grow the company.
In 1964, Lucky Store relocated. The new spot was at the corner of Steenbakkerijstraat and Maagdenstraat. This location offered about 180 square meters. By 1967, Lucky Store found its permanent home. It moved to Jodenbreestraat 38-40. Initially, the store occupied 225 square meters.
A significant expansion happened in 1996. Lucky Store grew to 850 square meters. Then, in December 2016, a transformation occurred. Lucky Store unveiled a three-level, modernized store. It now boasted 3500 square meters.
The grand opening introduced a new shopping experience. Lucky Store offered ample space and a pleasant atmosphere. Customers could relax at the Lucky Café. They could enjoy snacks and drinks. Free Wi-Fi was also available. The store ensured accessibility for everyone. Wheelchairs were welcome.
Parbode magazine noted the immense contrast. It was compared to the previous store. Narrow aisles were widened. TL lighting was replaced with LED lights. The design focused on sustainability. Comfort and Surinamese identity were key.
Lucky Store became a Friend of Green Suriname. This was with Conservation International Suriname. The building’s cooling system was climate-conscious. All renovations were done by Surinamese companies and workers.
De West newspaper likened the store’s look to the Dutch HEMA. Yet, authentic Surinamese products remained. Colorful pangi fabrics were still a staple. Since 2016, Lucky Store has hosted events for World Animal Experiment Day. It features cruelty-free cosmetics.
Lucky Store also has other locations. Dojo Couture, a clothing store, opened in 1980. It later expanded with an additional floor. A Dojo Couture branch appeared in the Maretraite Mall. Lucky Store Oso Sani sells appliances on Henck Arronstraat. Brands Only, a clothing store, is in TBL cinemas since around 2010. In 2018, Lucky Store launched its webshop.
Lucky Store employs between 201 and 500 people. It remains a public company. It offers retail, accessories, home and living goods. You can also find hospitality, beauty, cosmetics, and fashion items here. Lucky Store is more than just a department store. It is a landmark in Paramaribo.
