How did a small village near Milan contribute to the shaping of modern Italy? We’re standing at the edge of what was once Lucino, a village now absorbed into the town of Rodano. Lucino might seem unassuming today, but it played a part in the tumultuous birth of a nation. Back in the 18th century, Lucino was a humble village under Austrian rule. Then came the whirlwind of Napoleon Bonaparte. His conquests swept through Europe, redrawing borders and challenging old powers. In 1809, Napoleon decreed that Lucino would merge with its neighbor Rodano. This was a taste of the administrative changes Napoleon brought to Italy. After Napoleon’s fall, the Austrians returned and reversed many of his reforms. Lucino became independent again! However, even the Austrians recognized the practicality of Napoleon’s earlier decision. In 1841, they once again merged Lucino with Rodano. This back-and-forth reflects the turbulent times, a tug-of-war between old powers and new ideas. Lucino’s story, though seemingly small, echoes a larger narrative of unification and change that ultimately led to the Italy we know today.
