Gazing upon Loyola Campus, can you sense the echoes of its past? Loyola College, established in 1896, stands as a testament to a rich history. This campus, once the heart of Jesuit education in Montreal, has witnessed remarkable transformations over the years. Loyola College began as an English-language program at Collège Sainte-Marie de Montréal. It found its first home at the corner of Bleury and Saint Catherine streets. A fire in 1898 forced a move to Drummond Street. Finally, in 1916, Loyola College settled here, on Sherbrooke Street West, in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood. Originally a collège classique, Loyola College began granting university degrees through Université Laval in 1903. This partnership shifted to Université de Montréal in 1920. While affiliated with these universities, Loyola College maintained control over its curriculum. The college embraced change, transitioning to a humanistic Liberal Arts College in 1940. Loyola High School became a separate entity in 1964. In a significant turn of events, Loyola College merged with Sir George Williams University in 1974, forming Concordia University. Loyola Campus remains a vibrant part of Concordia, carrying its legacy forward. The Loyola Chapel, a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, still stands on the campus. It serves as a place of worship and hosts various events. Below the chapel lies the F.C. Smith Auditorium, a space now used for theatrical and cinematic presentations. Loyola College’s sports legacy lives on as well. Remember the Loyola Warriors? Their soccer team clinched a national championship in 1973. Today, Concordia’s Stingers carry the torch. Loyola Campus is more than just buildings. It’s a place where history comes alive.
