Founded in 1942 Loyal Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Its story begins with Reverend Abraham B Carter and two women Sis Carter his wife and Sis Ocie Adams Daniels. They gave the church its name Loyal. The first sermon was held with just two members. An old record player cabinet served as the pulpit.
Despite having only four members initially Reverend Carter’s unwavering faith propelled the church’s growth. He established several ministries including a senior choir a junior choir a missionary board and the Willing Workers Club. He passionately championed Sunday school. The church flourished under his leadership eventually reaching fifty members.
In April 1943 the church was officially incorporated under New York state law. This was a significant step solidifying its presence and structure. The church continued to expand its reach and impact under subsequent leadership. Reverend F Dixon and his wife Sis Callie Dixon further developed the church’s ministries. They added a Christian Education Department a Youth Department and a Senior Citizens Department.
Pastor Dixon also significantly improved the church building. He oversaw the covering of pews the carpeting of the floors and improvements to the lighting. He also secured a new van for transportation particularly for senior citizens. During his tenure Pastor Dixon licensed ministers and ordained deacons expanding the church’s leadership. He also welcomed the church’s first woman minister. The church experienced remarkable growth under his guidance baptizing many new members.
In 2002 Pastor Dixon retired. After a four-year search Reverend Dr Samuel E Trusty became the new pastor. He was warmly welcomed by the congregation. Reverend Trusty’s installation was a momentous occasion attended by his family his previous church family and many well-wishers.
The early years of Loyal Missionary Baptist Church were marked by humble beginnings and a strong commitment to faith. From its modest start with a record player cabinet as a pulpit it has grown into a thriving community. Loyal Missionary Baptist Church is a place where faith has consistently overcome challenges and where the spirit of community thrives. It continues to serve as a beacon of hope and faith in Houston.
