Founded in 1942 the Loyal Baptist Church stands proudly on East 167th Street. It began humbly. Reverend Abraham B Carter and two women Sis Carter and Sis Ocie Adams Daniels started it all. Their first sermon was held with just two members. An old record player cabinet served as the pulpit. Despite having only four members initially Reverend Carter’s faith never wavered.
He built the church up. He formed a Senior Choir a Junior Choir a Missionary Board and the Willing Workers Club. He championed Sunday school. The church grew to fifty members. In April 1943 it was incorporated under New York State law.
Reverend F Dixon and his wife Sis Callie Dixon took the reins later. They introduced a Christian Education Department a Youth Department and a Senior Citizens Department. They boosted participation in the Baptist Training Union and established a Floral Ministry. In 1987 Reverend Dixon spearheaded the purchase of the lot next to the church. He oversaw improvements such as pew coverings carpeting and better lighting. He even secured a new van for transportation particularly for senior citizens.
Reverend Dixon ordained several deacons and licensed ministers. He also acknowledged Minister Shirley Morgan as the church’s first female minister. Under his leadership Loyal Baptist Church thrived.
In 2002 Reverend Dixon retired. After a four-year search Reverend Dr Samuel E Trusty became the new pastor. He was welcomed warmly. Reverend Carter had retired to Virginia in 1946. Reverend Ernest Timothy Johnson better known as E T Johnson succeeded him. The church expanded rapidly under his guidance. He added the Senior and Junior Usher Boards. Reverend Johnson baptized ninety-one candidates. The church thrived because of his genuine love for each member.
Before 1954 services were held in a basement. The congregation raised $10000 for a down payment on a new building. They marched to their new home a half-mile journey filled with enthusiasm. The dedication service theme was The Lord Hath Done Great Things For Us Wherefore We Are Glad Loyalites. This reflected their journey and faith.
From 1955 to 1981 Reverend Johnson ordained sixteen deacons and licensed five ministers. Loyal Baptist Church continued to grow spiritually and financially. Reverend Johnson then oversaw a building renovation. In June 1969 he led the members into their newly renovated building. The same theme that guided them earlier continued to inspire their faith. In 1985 Reverend Johnson ordained four more deacons and mothers for the church. He also added new choirs.
In January 1986 Reverend Johnson passed away. In September 1986 Reverend Samuel F Dixon was installed as the new pastor. The Loyal Baptist Church’s history is a testament to faith perseverance and community. It’s a story of growth adaptation and unwavering devotion. A story that continues to unfold.
