Picture this a giant mitten lying on the map. That’s the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It’s the larger southern part of the state. The other part is the Upper Peninsula separated by the Straits of Mackinac.

The Lower Peninsula is known as “The Mitten” because of its shape. It’s even said to be a giant lumberjack’s handprint. Paul Bunyan’s handprint to be exact. A local legend. Locals will even show you where they live on their hand. Pointing to a spot on their palm.

This area is surrounded by water on three sides. Lake Michigan is to the west. Lake Huron is to the northeast. The southeast is bordered by the St Clair River Lake St Clair the Detroit River and Lake Erie. These waterways separate it from Canada. Only the south shares a land border with Indiana and Ohio.

The Lower Peninsula has a fascinating history. The French arrived in the 17th century. They traded with Native Americans and established Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit. Now that’s Detroit. The British took over in 1763 after the French and Indian War. The area then became part of the United States after the American Revolution.

The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 brought many people to Michigan. Shipping became easier and cheaper. The Lower Peninsula became a state in 1837. This happened after a boundary dispute with Ohio called the Toledo War. Ohio won the Toledo Strip but Michigan received the western part of the Upper Peninsula.

The Lower Peninsula is divided into two main parts. There is the Northern Lower Peninsula and the Southern Lower Peninsula. The North is mostly forested and less populated. The South is more urban and has more farmland.

The Lower Peninsula is generally flat with some hills and glacial moraines. The highest point isn’t completely certain but it is either Briar Hill or a nearby location near Cadillac. The lowest point sits on Lake Erie.

Because of the many rivers and lakes no point in the Lower Peninsula is more than six miles from water. Most are also less than 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes. This makes it very unique.

The Lower Peninsula’s diverse geography has shaped its culture. There are many lakes rivers forests and cities. The region’s history is full of stories from Native Americans early explorers and industrial growth. From the giant’s handprint legend to the bustling car industry the Lower Peninsula has it all.

It’s a place where the past and the present meet. A truly special place to visit and explore.
