“Could this be the place?” someone whispers as we approach the Lovers of the Holy Cross Convent Hanoi. This convent holds a special place in Vietnamese history. It represents faith, resilience, and the strength of women.
The Lovers of the Holy Cross is a federation of religious sisters. Pierre Lambert de la Motte founded it in 1670. He was the first Vicar Apostolic in Tonkin and Cochinchina. The order is the first female religious congregation with East Asian characteristics. These sisters are both contemplative and active. The Lovers of the Holy Cross began in Vietnam.
For over 300 years, the community faced many challenges. These included persecutions, disasters, wars, and political changes. Yet, their faith endured. The Lovers of the Holy Cross persevered.
Bishop Lambert de la Motte was a key figure. In 1633, he felt inspired to gather those who loved the Holy Cross. He envisioned a congregation called “Lovers of the Holy Cross”. This name came from “The Imitation of Christ.”
In 1670, Bishop Lambert accepted the vows of the first two sisters. Their names were Anna and Paula. This event marked the official founding of the Lovers of the Holy Cross in Vietnam. The sisters followed a set of rules given by Bishop Lambert. He said the rules came from God.
The Lovers of the Holy Cross had five principal duties. First, they offered prayers and sacrifices for redemption. They prayed for the conversion of China and Vietnam. Second, they educated young women. This included both Christian and non-Christian girls. Third, they cared for the sick. This care extended to people of all religions. Fourth, they baptized children in emergencies. Fifth, they helped women return to a dignified life.
The Lovers of the Holy Cross grew despite challenges. Vocations increased. Today, the order has spread beyond Vietnam. There are congregations in the United States, Thailand, and Laos. The Lovers of the Holy Cross of Los Angeles formed in 1992.
The spirituality of the Lovers of the Holy Cross centers on Jesus Christ. They embrace their own crosses. They serve others. They believe they are filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the Church.
