One hundred and seven years of joyful triumphs. That’s the legacy whispered by the walls of Love Joy Missionary Baptist Church. Right here in River Rouge Michigan this church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community.
Love Joy Missionary Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book. Its story began in 1914 a time of upheaval at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. A small group left seeking a different path. They started worshipping in homes. Eventually they raised $400. They bought land on the corner of Branham Avenue and Grover Street. Ed Holder built their first small church.
The early years saw several pastors. Then in 1920 Reverend John Lawson Vaughn arrived. He led the congregation for fifty years. His influence extended far beyond Love Joy. His impact spanned Alabama Rome and even the state and national Baptist conventions. He oversaw the building of a larger church after a devastating fire in 1955.
After Reverend Vaughn’s retirement three more pastors served. Then in 1987 Reverend Carey N Ingram became pastor. His leadership ushered in a new era of growth. Love Joy continued to flourish under his guidance.
