Imagine a time when the communities of Cardonald, Crookston, and Govan needed a beacon of education. That beacon became Lourdes Secondary School.

Lourdes Secondary School opened its doors in 1956. It stands as a testament to Glasgow’s commitment to Catholic education. The school serves a large catchment area. It includes communities like Ibrox, Kinning Park and Pollok. Lourdes has grown into a cornerstone of the community.

Originally designed by Thomas Smith Cordiner, the building’s architecture is quite interesting. It was built around a quadrangle, a peaceful internal garden. For years the quadrangle featured a flowerbed. Pupils designed it to look like the school crest for the new millennium.

An extension was added in the 1970s. Lourdes Secondary School now has over fifty classrooms. There are dedicated spaces for science, technical studies, and music. Sports are well catered for. The school boasts two astroturf pitches, three gymnasiums and a games hall. Lourdes Secondary School underwent a major refurbishment in 2002. This modernisation aligned with the City Council’s Project 2002.

Lourdes Secondary School isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people who have walked its halls. Several notable figures began their journey here. Consider Harry Conroy. He was once the General Secretary of the National Union of Journalists. Tommy Sheridan, a politician, is also a former pupil. Dean Keenan pursued a career as footballer. Brian McBride became the vice-president of the Confederation of British Industry. Mhairi Black is the youngest MP elected since 1832. Siriki Dembélé is also among Lourdes Secondary School’s alumni.

Today, Lourdes Secondary School continues to thrive. It serves around 1,462 pupils with a staff of 90. Lourdes is a comprehensive school for S1-S6 pupils. The school has a strong track record. It consistently improves outcomes for all learners. Lourdes learning community consists of seven feeder primary schools. These include Lourdes Primary and St Constantine’s Primary.

Lourdes Secondary School stands as more than just a school. It is a symbol of community. It is a place where young minds are nurtured. As you continue your journey, remember the story of Lourdes. Remember its commitment to Glasgow’s youth.
