Right in front of you is a humble plaque. It may seem insignificant, but this plaque commemorates a man who was central to the development of Denmark’s working class. It reads: “Louis Pio, founder of the Danish Social Democracy, was born on this site December 14, 1841.” This is the Louis Pio Plaque, a testament to the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to improving the rights of Denmark’s working people.

Louis Pio, born right here in Roskilde, was a charismatic and controversial figure. He was a writer, journalist, and political organizer. He learned about socialism from studying folklore – his work, “The Legend of Holger Danske,” is inspired by the stories of the oppressed rising against their oppressors. Pio was a fervent believer in social reform and saw the need for a structured workers’ movement in Denmark. He was inspired by the Paris Commune of 1871, where workers rose in rebellion, and the English model of trade unions.

In 1871, Pio established the International Workers’ Association of Denmark, along with Harald Brix and Paul Geleff. They created a newspaper called “Socialisten” (The Socialist), which became a potent voice for the working class. Pio was the organization’s main writer and a leading strategist, embracing tactics like strikes. He used strikes, however, only when certain conditions were met: a majority of the strikers belonged to the International, sufficient funds were available, and strikes weren’t happening simultaneously in multiple fields. It was Pio’s strategic thinking and his work with strikes that helped the International’s membership grow rapidly.

Pio believed strongly in the power of collective action and wanted to create a better future for workers. His activism, however, made him a target of the Danish government. In 1872, after calling for a public worker meeting, Pio was arrested and imprisoned. He was sentenced to five years for defying a government ban on such meetings. Pio, however, was viewed as a martyr by the socialist movement: his message of unity was stronger than ever. He continued to write articles that were smuggled out of prison and published in “Socialisten”, which helped to spread his message and further solidify his place as a leader in the movement.

The plaque may seem small, but it tells a big story! It reminds us of a man who fought fiercely for social justice and whose commitment to workers’ rights played a pivotal role in shaping modern Denmark. You’re now standing where Louis Pio’s legacy began.
