The Loggia dei Mercanti, itself a symbol of Milanese resistance, became a place of clandestine meetings for the Aquile Randagie, Catholic scouts banned by the fascist regime. They met under the Loggia’s protective cover, holding secret masses before venturing out into the city. In the aftermath of April 25, 1945, this very spot transformed into a spontaneous memorial. Grieving Milanese citizens placed photographs of their lost loved ones here, creating a tapestry of loss and remembrance. The Lotta di Liberazione Plaque within the Loggia dei Mercanti became the official memorial in 1953. The culmination of efforts by the Committee for Honouring the Fallen for Freedom Victims, chaired by Liberation Mayor Antonio Greppi.
