Ever wonder where champions are made? Here at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, legends were born. This isn’t just a tennis facility. It is a place where Olympic dreams came true.
The Los Angeles Tennis Center opened on May 20, 1984. It was built for the 1984 Summer Olympics. During the Olympics, the center hosted the demonstration tennis event. This showcased the sport before it officially rejoined the Olympic program in 1988.
In 1985, the UCLA Bruins men’s tennis team moved here. The women’s team joined them in 1997. Since then, the Los Angeles Tennis Center has been their home. This is where they practice, compete, and strive for greatness.
The Los Angeles Tennis Center has hosted major championships. The NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships were held here in 1984, 1987, and 1988. The Men’s Championships took place here in 1997. These events brought top collegiate talent to the courts.
For many years, the Los Angeles Tennis Center hosted the Los Angeles Open. This ATP World Tour 250 event drew professional players from around the globe. Spectators filled the 5,800-seat grandstand. They watched thrilling matches and cheered on their favorite players.
But the Los Angeles Tennis Center is more than just tennis. It has been a stage for various events. UCLA’s student talent show, “Spring Sing,” was a regular event here. The George and Ira Gershwin Award was also presented.
Many famous people have graced this stage. Angela Lansbury, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles are just a few. Debbie Allen, Mel Torme, and Bernadette Peters have also been honored here. Even Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder have been part of this tradition.
Graduation ceremonies were often held here too. This provided a memorable setting for students celebrating their achievements. The Los Angeles Tennis Center also hosted the 1997 Beach Volleyball World Championships. It even hosted an MTV Rock N’ Jock event.
In 2011, Coldplay performed a concert at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. In 2012, presidential candidate Ron Paul spoke to a large crowd here. The 2015 JazzReggae Festival @ UCLA also took place on these grounds.
The Southern California Tennis Association has offices here. This further solidifies the center’s role in the tennis community. As you stand here, you can almost hear the echoes of cheering crowds. The Los Angeles Tennis Center continues to be a vibrant hub for sports and entertainment.
