Ever wondered about the secrets held within these walls? The Los Angeles Public Library stands before you a majestic monument to learning and perseverance. This isn’t just any library. It’s the Richard J Riordan Central Library the main branch of the Los Angeles Public Library system. It’s a landmark in Downtown Los Angeles a testament to the city’s spirit.

Built in 1925 the original Goodhue Building is an architectural marvel. Its Art Deco and Mexican Late Baroque styles are breathtaking. The building’s design is steeped in symbolism. Look closely at the central tower. You’ll see a tiled mosaic pyramid topped with a hand holding a torch representing the “Light of Learning”. Sphinxes snakes and celestial mosaics adorn its exterior. This stunning structure has been on the National Register of Historic Places since December 18 1970. It is a designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

But the Los Angeles Public Library’s story isn’t without its trials. In 1986 two devastating arson fires ripped through the building. The April 29th fire destroyed 20 percent of the library’s collection. Around 400000 volumes were lost. 700000 more were damaged. The estimated cost for replacing the lost books was over $14 million. This catastrophic event nearly ended the library. However the library did not end.

The fires became a catalyst for change. A massive renovation and expansion followed. The Tom Bradley addition named after the mayor who championed the rebuilding effort opened in 1993. This addition is enormous about the same size as the original building. It added an underground parking facility an atrium a large auditorium and a puppet theater. The renovated library reopened in 1993. It is now 538000 square feet large. It houses nearly 89 miles of shelves. There is seating for over 1400 people.

The Los Angeles Public Library is more than just books. It houses the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection. This extensive collection includes over 3 million historic photographs. Many images are available online. The library also has a Science Technology & Patents Department which functions as a US Patent & Trademark Resource Center. It holds a complete collection of all Patent and Trademark Office publications. The Feathers map collection donated in 2012 is another impressive treasure. It contains approximately 100000 maps making it one of the largest in the country.

The Los Angeles Public Library’s resilience its commitment to learning and its vast collection of knowledge makes it a true Los Angeles icon. The Library is a place where the past present and future intertwine. It is a must-see destination for any visitor to this vibrant city. Step inside and discover its magic for yourself.
