Did you know the Los Angeles LGBT Center started in 1969? That’s right. Right here where we stand. This very spot holds a significant piece of history. It’s not just a building. It’s a beacon of hope and a testament to the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Los Angeles LGBT Center wasn’t always the largest LGBTQ+ organization in the world. It began as a small group of activists led by Morris Kight and Don Kilhefner. They shared a powerful dream. They wanted a place of safety and community for LGBTQ+ individuals. This dream manifested as the Gay Community Services Center. It started in a modest Victorian house on Wilshire Boulevard. It was the first non-profit in America to include the word “gay” in its name a daring move at the time.

Over the decades the Center has evolved. It expanded its services drastically. The Center now offers an extensive range of services. These include health care social services housing and advocacy programs. The growth is phenomenal. They serve thousands of people annually. Their impact is undeniable.

In 2010 a significant milestone occurred. The Center received a huge grant. It was a $13.3 million five-year grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services. This funding allowed the creation of a model program for LGBTQ youth in foster care. It was the largest federal grant ever awarded to an LGBT organization.

The Center also honors its history. In 1998 they named their library the Judith Light Library after actress Judith Light. The legacy of Holly Woodlawn lives on too. Her estate created a memorial fund for transgender youth at the Center. This fund supports vital programs such as Trans Pride LA and transgender health care services.

Today the Los Angeles LGBT Center boasts several locations throughout Los Angeles. The Anita May Rosenstein Campus is the new headquarters. It is a state-of-the-art facility offering comprehensive services. The center is much more than a building. It is a community a family and a vital resource for the LGBTQ+ community. It continues to fight for equality and justice. The Center’s ongoing work is a powerful tribute to its founders. Their vision continues to bloom today. It is a beautiful symbol of hope. Everyone deserves to live freely and to shine. The Los Angeles LGBT Center makes sure that happens.
