Hidden within the vibrant art scene of Los Angeles is the Los Angeles Art Association. It’s a place where emerging artists find their voice. The Los Angeles Art Association has a rich history, going back almost a century. Founded in 1925, its initial goal was to bring high-quality art to the city and build a public collection of European and American masterpieces. Originally known as the Museum Patrons Association, this group was formed by influential figures like Harry Chandler, publisher of the Los Angeles Times. They aimed to revitalize the then-stagnant art department of the local museum. In 1933, the association became independent, renaming itself the Los Angeles Art Association. It flourished, hosting exhibitions and boasting a substantial membership. One notable event was the “All-California Art Exhibition” at the Biltmore Salon in 1934, showcasing over 1,500 California artists. The Los Angeles Art Association even exhibited Rembrandt etchings that same year. During the late 1930s, the association moved its headquarters to the Earl Mansion on Wilshire Boulevard, creating a central art hub for Angelenos. Over the years, the Los Angeles Art Association shifted its focus. With the emergence of the County Museum, the association dedicated itself to promoting contemporary Southern California artists. The Los Angeles Art Association played a vital role in the careers of many notable artists. Wayne Thiebaud, for example, exhibited there in 1948, and Hans Burkhardt had his first solo exhibition at the association in 1951. Despite facing financial challenges and relocation, the Los Angeles Art Association persevered. It eventually found its current home on La Cienega Boulevard in 1960, a location that would later become known as “Gallery Row.” Today, the Los Angeles Art Association, also known as Gallery 825, remains a cornerstone of the Los Angeles art world. It continues to champion emerging artists, offering exhibitions, mentorship programs, and career workshops. The association’s legacy is a testament to the power of community, the enduring appeal of art, and the importance of supporting the next generation of creative talent.
