Legend says that Lord Shiva once beheaded Lord Ganesh. This was for refusing him entry while Goddess Parvati bathed. Later, Shiva restored Ganesh to life with an elephant’s head. This tale sets the stage for our visit to the Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple.

Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple is in Besant Nagar Chennai. It stands as a testament to faith. It is dedicated to Lord Vinayaka also known as Ganesha. He is the remover of obstacles. He is the god of wisdom.

The Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple is near the beach. It offers a serene escape. The temple actively feeds the poor. It frequently holds poojas. These acts reflect its deep community connection.

The temple’s first consecration was in April 1979. Before that, the idol was worshipped across the street. It was within the CPWD Quarters. Inside the temple, you will see Valampuri Varasiddhi Vinayakar with his consort Siddhi. Above this idol is a smaller Ganesh. This smaller Ganesh was the original worshipped idol.

Developments followed rapidly. An auditorium was built. It sits behind the main temple. A Goshala was added. The temple hosts music during Vinayakar Chathurthi in the auditorium.

Vinayaka Chathurthi is a major festival here. It falls in August or September. Devotees prepare Kozhukattai. It is a sweet dish of rice, jaggery and coconut. It is believed to be Lord Ganesh’s favorite.

Four rituals mark the festival. These are Pran Pratishtha. Shodashopachara. Uttar Puja. Ganpati Visarjan. The final day is Ananta Chaturdashi. The Lord’s idol is immersed in the sea then.

The Varasiddhi Vinayagar Temple is more than a religious site. It embodies Chennai’s cultural spirit. It blends devotion with community service. Visiting here offers peace. It offers a deeper understanding of Hindu traditions. As you leave, carry the blessings of Lord Vinayagar. Remember the stories and the sense of tranquility.
