The Loopline Bridge, a steel giant, stands proudly over the River Liffey. It is a symbol of Dublin’s industrial past, a connection between north and south. The bridge was built in the late 19th century and was subject to much controversy. Many people believed that the bridge would block the view of the Custom House. The Loopline Bridge is made of wrought iron lattice girders on a double row of piers with five spans. It is approximately six metres above street level and supports two railway tracks. You can still see the scars of its history in the worn steel and the weathered limestone of the piers. This iconic structure has witnessed the bustle of Dublin for over a century carrying trains filled with passengers and cargo. The Loopline Bridge is a stark reminder of how our city has changed, but in a way, it’s also preserved a piece of that past. Despite its controversial history, the Loopline Bridge has become a vital part of Dublin’s transportation network. The locals may argue if it is an eyesore or a necessary part of their city’s landscape, but they all agree that the Loopline Bridge is a permanent and powerful feature of the Dublin skyline.
