Stretching across Sichuan province, the Longmen Mountains whisper tales of geological wonder. The Longmen Mountains are more than just a scenic backdrop. They are a testament to the immense forces that have shaped southwestern China.

The Longmen Mountains run from Guangyuan to Chengdu Prefecture. They form the northwestern edge of the Sichuan basin. These mountains mark the eastern rim of the Tibetan Plateau.

Did you know that the Longmen Mountains’ uplift is due to slippage on the Longmenshan Fault? This fault represents the boundary between the Bayan Kola block and the South China block. The Longmenshan Fault’s movement is why the mountains are here.

Some maps differentiate the Longmen Mountains. The northeastern section retains the name Longmen Mountains. The taller southwestern section is sometimes called the Chaping Mountains.

The Longmen Mountains hide a secret. The Longmenshan Fault is responsible for several major earthquakes. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the 2013 Lushan earthquake and the 2022 Ya’an earthquakes all occurred here. The fault is still active. It poses a risk of future seismic events.

Imagine the power needed to create such a dramatic landscape. Elevations rise from 600 m in the Sichuan Basin to peaks exceeding 6500 m. This change happens over a horizontal distance of less than 50 km. The topographic gradients often exceed 10%.

Jiudengshan is the range’s highest point. It stands at 4984 m above sea level. Jiudengshan translates to Nine-Peak Mountain.

The Longmen Mountains influence the climate around them. The annual average temperature in the Longquan Mountain area is 16 degrees Celsius. The annual precipitation is 920 mm.

The Longmen Mountains are more than just rocks. They represent a dynamic interaction of geological forces. These forces continue to shape the landscape and influence the lives of those living nearby. The Longmen Mountains are a stark reminder of earth’s power. They are a monument to its ongoing evolution.
