Long View Scenic Overlook gives you a panoramic view of Lake Mead. Mountain ranges surround this area. From this high point, you can even hike down to the lake area below. This will be about half a mile to the far end of the shoreline.

Plan for just five minutes if you only want to see the view. If you plan to explore near the lake, plan for one to two hours. The best times to visit Long View Scenic Overlook are October through April. The summer months can be extremely hot. Mid-day may be too hot to enjoy the view. Temperatures can easily reach over 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Even early morning temperatures are above 80 degrees.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is open 24 hours a day. It’s open 365 days a year. Admission fees are 25 dollars per vehicle. These passes are good for up to seven days. Campgrounds are 20 dollars per night. You can also use the National Park Year Permit here. Only electronic card payments are accepted for entrance, lake use and campground fees.

Long View Scenic Overlook has restrooms. There is no source for water filling. You’ll have cell reception in most areas near Las Vegas. During summer months, it is extremely hot. Even though this isn’t a long hike, it is not recommended mid-day. Come as early in the morning as you can or late in the afternoon. Dogs are welcome. They must be on a leash. Overnight camping is not permitted. Bring enough water for a full hiking day. The trail is exposed to the sun. There is no shade. Good hiking shoes with grip traction are recommended. The rocks near the lake are sharp. As always in the desert, long sleeves, sunblock and sunglasses are recommended. Because you are near Arizona, the time zone may change on your phone. Be aware of that when hiking. Make sure you have enough sunlight to return to your car.

Long View Scenic Overlook provides amenities. These include picnic tables and trash receptacles. There is parking for autos and buses or RVs. Vault or composting toilets are available.

The overlook gives you an expansive view of the lake. You will also see the surrounding mountains and desert terrain. You can see how water and land shape the environment. Whether for photography or simply enjoying the view, Long View Scenic Overlook offers a look at the park’s natural features.

Park your car and walk to the viewing platform. This area is a west finger of the lake named Las Vegas Bay. You are overall looking northeast. The lake water level is low. Many of the islands are now connected to the shore. They create many small coves. You can see the mountains north of the lake. These are the Muddy Mountains Wilderness. Far to the right on the other side of the lake, you will see Fortification Hill in Arizona.

You can walk down on several unofficial trails. Explore the inland coves. Walk to the tip of the land in front of you. Climb the small hill. Once, this was an island. Climb down to the lake shore. You can see interesting rock formations. You can explore small coves.
