Do you hear that? The faint echo of shovels striking earth. That’s the sound of Long Phuoc Ward during the war, a symphony of resilience. Long Phuoc Ward wasn’t always tranquil streets and bustling markets. This place holds a secret, a testament to the spirit of those who fought for their homeland. Beneath the surface lies a network of tunnels, the Long Phuoc Tunnels. They weren’t as extensive as their more famous cousins in Cu Chi, but they were a lifeline nonetheless. Villagers, even before 1949, began digging these subterranean havens as refuge from enemy raids. One man, Mr. Nam Hoi, inspired it all by seeking shelter in a bomb crater. His simple act of survival became a blueprint for the entire village. By 1963, the Long Phuoc Tunnels stretched from Dong hamlet to Bac hamlet. They were more than just hiding places; they were intricate, interconnected worlds. They housed fighting positions, medical stations, even storage for weapons and food. These tunnels witnessed fierce battles, particularly in 1963 when they withstood assaults despite enemy attempts to destroy them. Sadly, in 1966, Operation Enogerra targeted the tunnel system. Today, the scars of war have healed, paving the way for a new era in Long Phuoc Ward. But the spirit of the tunnels lives on. It’s a reminder of the bravery, ingenuity, and unwavering resolve that helped shape this community into what it is today.
