Across the water lies Long Island, a place brimming with stories. Long Island holds the distinction of being the largest and longest island in Boston Harbor. Its history stretches back to prehistoric times, with archaeologists suspecting the presence of ancient habitation sites. Imagine, in 1634, the island became home to 40 families who worked the land as tenant farmers. Over the centuries, Long Island played many roles. It was a strategic military location. Fort Wightman, later renamed Fort Strong, was built here in 1863. Near its walls lie the remains of 79 Civil War soldiers. During World War I, 500 soldiers were stationed at Fort Strong. The fort now stands abandoned and in disrepair. In the 1950s, a Nike missile base occupied the island. After the missiles were removed, the base took on a surprising new role, storing books from the Boston Public Library. Long Island also served as a refuge and a place of healing. During the 19th century, it was a popular resort destination. The largest hotel was acquired by the City of Boston in 1882 and transformed into a poor house for 650 people just a few years later. The island later housed a home and hospital for unwed mothers. It also provided shelter for homeless men and treatment for alcoholics. The 60-acre Long Island Chronic Care Hospital eventually closed its doors. Guiding lights have also marked Long Island’s history. The first lighthouse was constructed around 1794 on Long Island Head. A second lighthouse, built in 1819, still stands, although it has been moved twice to accommodate military structures. In 2014, the Long Island Bridge, connecting the island to Moon Island, was deemed unsafe and demolished, closing off road access to the island. Today, Long Island remains inaccessible to the public. Its stories, however, continue to echo across the harbor, whispering tales of a bygone era.
