Built in 1910 and 1911, the Lokstedter Wasserturm stands tall. It’s a prominent landmark in the Lokstedt district of Hamburg. This water tower isn’t just a historical artifact. It has been cleverly repurposed into unique residential apartments. The Lokstedter Wasserturm’s 50.25-meter height dominates the surrounding low-rise buildings. It’s a beacon in the landscape, a testament to its enduring presence. The tower’s design is a beautiful example of industrial architecture from the Historismus period. It’s constructed from brick and clad in copper sheeting, which gives it a distinctive gleam. The tower’s shape is conical, narrowing as it rises, culminating in a projecting head where the water tank once resided. Now, this space holds exclusive apartments. Atop the head sits a conical roof with a decorative lantern, adding a final flourish to the tower’s elegant silhouette. Originally, the Lokstedter Wasserturm housed a 500 cubic meter Intze-I water tank. This tank was made of wrought iron and measured 10 meters in diameter and 7 meters in height. The “nutzhöhe,” or effective height, of the water was 36.5 meters above ground level. While the tower served primarily for pressure equalization and reserve, it played a crucial role in supplying water to Lokstedt and even the neighboring community of Niendorf starting in 1912. The Lokstedter Wasserturm’s story took a turn in 1984. The Schwander family purchased the tower and embarked on a project to convert it into residential space. This conversion included the installation of an elevator and the creation of a small apartment on the first floor. The most impressive transformation occurred within the former water tank itself. While the inner cylinder of the tank was removed, the outer shell remained. This formed the basis for a unique three-level apartment, a truly extraordinary living space. The exterior of the tower saw only minor alterations, primarily larger windows in the tank area, preserving its historic appearance. The Lokstedter Wasserturm stands as a symbol of adaptation and innovation. It’s a remarkable blend of historical significance and modern living.
