Ever wonder what a “Tigerli” is? Right here before you sits Lokomotive Tigerli, a small but mighty engine with a striped history. Lokomotive Tigerli is more than just a train; it’s a piece of Swiss railway heritage. These E 3/3 locomotives, nicknamed “Tigerli,” were workhorses for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), primarily used for shunting. The SBB acquired a total of 61 of these locomotives. Our Lokomotive Tigerli, number 8522, has a particularly interesting story. During World War II, coal became scarce. To keep the trains running, Lokomotive Tigerli and its sibling, number 8521, were modified with electric boiler heating, powered by overhead lines. They even sported pantographs on their roofs. Imagine Lokomotive Tigerli, this little steam engine, drawing power from the electric lines. This innovative solution, however, didn’t catch on long-term. The electric heating equipment on Lokomotive Tigerli was removed in 1953. Today, you see it in its original steam-powered glory. Lokomotive Tigerli eventually found a new home with the Sursee-Triengen-Bahn, where it continues to operate, a testament to its enduring design.
